Chelmsford Cobras 11 Oxford University Blues 2

April 24th 1999, Women's League Division One - South

Cobras entered this, their penultimate game of the season, looking to get back on track after three consecutive away defeats. The first period saw both teams cancel each other out quite effectively, with Chelmsford having the bulk of the chances, but the University also having a couple of good efforts on breakaways, both goalies, however, were up to the task.

There were only three minutes left in the period, when Rachael Mockler let loose a thundering slapshot from the blue line, which found its way into the Blues net for the only score in the first stanza.

The second period saw the Cobras come out looking determined, and within four minutes they were rewarded when Emma Stott was on hand to slot in the second. Chelmsford's momentum was halted briefly when Jen Stedman took a couple of minor penalties, but whilst shorthanded on the second of these, Katy Allen grabbed the Cobras' third, and seconds after they returned to full strength Rachael Mockler grabbed her second and Chelmsford's fourth. With just under three minutes left in the period, Katy Allen was on hand to finish a fine move, and make the score 5-0 for Chelmsford two thirds of the way through the game.

Cobras entered the final period on the powerplay, and a minute later Emma Stott had increased the lead to six, only to make it seven, with her hat trick goal, another minute later. Soon after this, with the Cobras intent on attack, Oxford University broke free, and Candida Moss was on hand to reduce the defecit.

Chelmsford regrouped, and it wasn't long before Rachel Kearn opened her account, and took the score to 8-1, and Emma Stott's fourth goal increased the lead to eight. Cobras then took a timeout, and when it seemed that all the scoring was complete, Oxford had another breakaway, and Candida Moss grabbed her, and the Blues' second goal. They then took their own timeout, and Cobras, and player of the game Jen Stedman, grabbed another two goals, to finish the scoring at 11-2.

Oxford University's player of the game was netminder, Andrea Cummins, who had faced 37 shots as opposed to the 9 by her opposite number Carly Davis in the Cobras net.

Next Cobras game is Saturday 1st May, at Riverside, starting at 5:15pm, against league champions, Cardiff Comets. Please come and cheer the Cobras as they attempt to break the Comets 100% unbeaten record.

Chelmsford: Emma Stott 4+3(0), Jen Stedman 2+4(4), Rachael Mockler 2+2(0), Katy Allen 2+0(0), Rachel Kearn 1+2(0).
