Chelmsford Cobras v Cardiff Comets at Chelmsford on 03-Jan-98

Last modified: Mon Jan 5 07:50:31 GMT 1998
Cobras entered the New Year placed just below midway in the League, and up against the unbeaten Comets were set to have another battle on their hands. Once again, the Cobras were short of players, but started the game at a frantic pace, eager to preserve their unbeaten record against Cardiff.

The first period saw the teams playing entertaining end to end hockey, and it was just over halfway into the period when player of the game, Jen Stedman, finished a good Chelmsford attack with the opening goal of the game, the Cobras first in almost 160 minutes of play.

Cardiff seemed shocked into action at this point, and started to pile the pressure onto the Cobras net, finally getting the equaliser from Annie Sykes with a little over three minutes remaining in the period.

As the second period started, it was as if another Comets team were playing, and they thoroughly dominated the play, outshooting Chelmsford 24-1 in this middle stanza, and getting five more goals (Sam Jones, Elaine Whitney, two from Helen Wilson, and a superb solo effort from Lorraine McMullen) for their efforts, to lead the game 6-1 at the end of two periods.

The final session saw very little goal mouth action, with only four shots in the period, as Cardiff notched one more goal from Elaine Whitney, to win 7-1 and maintain their unbeaten record, with guest netminder Sarah Vic winning the player of the game award.

This game was the Cobras final home league game of the season, but they still have five more away fixtures.
