Chelmsford Cobras v Romford Nighthawks at Chelmsford on 28-Sep-97

Last modified: Fri Oct 17 13:15:19 BST 1997
Chelmsford came into this game with confidence, having never previously been beaten by Romford, and after their season opening 7-3 win over Invicta Dynamics.

The teams played very close hockey, with few chances going to either side as they cancelled each other out in the first period. The best opportunity came for Romford on the powerplay, but the Cobras were able to neutralize the threat and the teams went into the break tied 0-0.

Romford appeared to come out more fired up for the second period, and started applying the pressure, which paid off just over three minutes into the period when Zoe Gilbert managed to put away Vicky Arnold's pass. This appeared to fire up the Cobras, and they stepped up their game, only to see the Nighthawks break away and notch a second goal, this time from player of the game Stacey Mayo.

The play then reverted to the style of the first period, with both teams having chances but being unable to finish. It was the Cobras chance on the powerplay at the end of the period, but to no avail as their chances were erased by the solid Nighthawks defence.

As the third session started, the Cobras came out playing like they really meant it, and managed to keep sustained pressure on the Romford net, even when they were a player short, but whatever they tried, whether it was shots, or passes, seemed to fail. With ninety seconds remaining the Nighthawks called a nerve steadying timeout and managed to preserve the shutout for netminder Jane Austin despite the Cobras outshooting the Nighthawks 10-4 in the final stanza.
