Chelmsford Cobras v Invicta Dynamics at Chelmsford on 14-Sep-97

Returning to Division One for the new season, Chelmsford Cobras opened with a bang against the new names from Invicta Dynamics (formerly Medway Grizzly Bears), with the opening goal from Emma Stott after only 89 seconds, with Rachel Kearn getting the assist, for her first point for the team on her first shift. Both teams were still eager to generate offence, and with the play going end to end, Invicta equalised just 4 minutes into the game.

Cobras soon hit back, 8 seconds later when Emma Stott notched her second goal, assisted by Rachael Mockler, this was followed a minute later by a goal by Rachael herself to open up a two goal lead for the Cobras.

This was the end of the scoring in the first period, which saw both teams consolidating their position, and killing off some penalties, with Invicta showing their inexperience by taking the first of two "too many players on the ice" penalties, and with a tripping call following this, the Cobras must have been disappointed to not score after almost two minutes with two players advantage. However, they also managed to kill off a minor call towards the end of the period to go in with their two goal lead intact.

The Cobras started the second period explosively again, and within a minute goals from Rachael Mockler and Jen Stedman had doubled the lead, this was followed by a tripping call on Claire Ruse, upon which Invicta managed to capitalise, and Amanda Broderick opened the scoring on the powerplay.

The rest of the period saw a number of chance to both sides, but mostly to Cobras, and when Invicta took a minor penalty in the last two minutes they must have fancied their chances to capitalise, and they did get the pressure, only for a loose puck and a slip by the Cobras defence to set Broderick free again for her second, and a short-handed tally, to send the teams to the second break with the Cobras leading 5-3.

Another rapid start saw the Cobras expand their lead again, with player of the game, Marianne Wright skating the full length of the ice to net, followed by Rachael Mockler's hat-trick goal give the Cobras a four goal lead.

The last ten minutes saw a number of penalties, which left the teams short-handed, and seemingly happy to keep what they'd got, Cobras took this opportunity to give some ice time to the rookies they had on their bench, and the game finished with a final score of Cobras 7 Dynamics 3, with the Cobras having out shot Invicta by 33-7.
