Peterborough Penguins v Chelmsford Cobras at Peterborough on 29-Mar-2003

Last modified: Tue 1 Apr 16:19:55 2003
Well, the Peterborough Penguins have really improved! The last time we met was in October, when the Cobras ran out 9-2 victors at home, but it was a different matter today!

Chelmsford opened with a penalty on captain Emma Stott at 1.03 for holding the stick, but the short-handed line saw the Penguins off after some great attempts on goal. Cobras then hit their first goal at 06.45 as Sue Williams blasted her pass from the blue line assisted by Nikki Grant. Chelmsford then got another 2 goals as Rachel Kearn danced around the Peterborough defence to shoot at 13.01, assisted by Karen Law, swiftly followed by an unassisted strike by Stott at 14.09, closing the first period 0-3 in favour of the visitors.

The second period saw some great saves from both keepers and good, hard, end to end hockey was played. Penguins broke their duck at 20.58 as Emma Wildman shot from just inside the blue line, defeating Chelmsford's netminder Anna Kirkby. Undeterred, the Cobras fought back and scored their forth and final goal, again by Kearn from Law at 26.42. Defender Jo Abbs went into the bin at 26.59 for tripping, giving a final Powerplay to Peterborough, but they were unable to capitalise again, due to some strong defensive work from the visitors.

The third period again, saw end to end action, with both keepers pulling off some great saves, but was uneventful in that the final score ran out with Chelmsford winning 4-1 over the home side Peterborough. Chelmsford's Spirit of the Game went to young defender, 13 year old Vicki Juniper, whilst the Peterborough award went to Jen King.
