Women's Ice Hockey - British Women's League, Division One (South)

7th November 1999 Chelmsford Cobras 12 Streatham Storm 3

In their second home fixture of the season, Chelmsford Cobras entertained Streatham Storm, in the Storm's first fixture of the season. Both teams were short of players, Captain Emma Stott was out with the flu as well as Jen Stedman and Becky Preen, and Streatham were without a number of players due to incomplete registrations. Streatham's netminder, Mel Higgs, was starting her first league game in net.

Chelmsford came out on fire, and opened the scoring at 1:46 through Carmel Buttimer, and doubled their lead just before five minutes through Katy Allen. The game then went quiet as the teams appeared to be trying to find a way though each others defence.

With only three and a half minutes left in the period, Streatham opened their account though their player of the game, Amanda Fisher. This served as a wakeup call for the Cobras, as Rachel Kearn and Stacey Wood doubled the Chelmsford total in a 27 second span. That was the final scoring in the period, as Cobras lead 4-1 after outshooting Streatham 8-3.

The second period again saw the Cobras dominant, with both Stacey Wood and Carmel Buttimer completely their hat tricks. Although at least as notable was some solid defence by the Chelmsford, with player of the game Heather Wright having a couple of very impressive shifts preventing the visiting Storm from getting any effective shots on goal.

The final action in the period was a second goal for Streatham, and arguably the goal of the game as Elli Gomm backhanded the puck into the roof of the net from the high slot, this time the shots were 16-3 to Chelmsford, for a second 4-1 period.

Into the final period, and Chelmsford continued their control, Katy Allen grabbing two goals to complete her hat-trick, Stacey Wood getting her fourth, and Marianne Wright opening her account for the season with a shot from the blue line which somehow evaded all the legs in front of the net. Streatham's goal in this period, came from Claire Udy, as she was on hand to slot away a loose puck.

The shots in this period were 20-7 in favour of the Cobras, for a final game total of 44-13.

The next Cobras home game is 22nd January 2000, when they entertain last years champions, Cardiff Comets who are again setting the pace in the league.
